Leuke is a small island in the Black Sea. According to mythology, the Greek god Poseidon created Leuke as a place to bury the hero Achilles, whose temple is still standing. It is also said that Helen married Achilles while Thetis and Poseidon served as witnesses.
Leuke is a part of Greek myth, appearing in, among other places, the Aethiopis by Arctinus of Miletus. later and more salacious version, undoubtedly relating to the spirit which moved Mina to conjugal activity, appears in James Branch Cabell's Jurgen, A Comedy of Justice.
